Haven't got a date fixed yet, but I am delighted to have been asked to return to Baylis Court School in Slough again for another workshop day to inspire their textile students. The theme is 'Recycle' and the students have been exploring artists such as Cas Holmes, Natalie Chanin and Alison Willoughby.
Right up my street ... I can't wait. It was a lovely experience last year and the girls were really enthusiatic. The school is a Specialist Arts College and received an Outstanding Ofsted report in 2008.

I'm very pleased to be working with textile and mixed media artist Sabi Westoby on the design of her new website and publicity material for her new exhibition 'Filamental'.
The website design has come together really well and we're really pleased with it. And here is the poster design which shows details of Sabi's beautiful work:

The exhibition opens on 11 February in Thirsk, North Yorkshire and runs until 24 March. I'm just sorry its such a long way away from me here in Ascot. I hope you can visit, but if you are a long way away too, there is an extensive gallery of Sabi's work to be explored on the website.

Recycled workshops at Knitting & Stitching Shows, London & Dublin

Phew, such a busy time! Just back from Dublin and with Alexandra Palace over too, I've had a great time and met lots of lovely ladies who joined me for my recycled notebook covers, and lettering applique workshops. I'll post some piccys as soon as I can.
Can't wait for Harrogate K&S ... I'll be there on 25th and 26th November, where I'm doing 6 workshops. Lucky there is no weight limit on suitcases on the train. I bearly scraped on my Dublin flight with 20.2kg with enough materials for 4 workshops.

We held our Private View towards the end of the exhibition for 'Whatever floats your boat ...'. I was very pleased with how the exhibition turned out on the whole, with very few glitches considering the time we had to plan and install the exhibition.

My piece was a series of 5 hangings inspired by Ellimans Embrocation - a medicine invented and originally manufactured in Slough.

We were very pleased to have Nigel Bird photograph the event, and the Mayor of Bracknell Town as a VIP guest.

The group textile exhibition I have organised and curated for the Thames Valley Contemporary Textiles and Quilt group is up and running until 11th June. Hooray! As a group we took inspiration from Slough and the collections in the Slough Museum as a starting point to make our pieces and find the thing that 'floated our boat'.

The results are fantastic. We had 28 artists participating in the project who made 42 pieces to display. Wow! What a variety in so many ways. There were big pieces, tiny pieces. Big 3-d and tiny 3-d. Lots of quilts and lots of other things. Colourful pieces and muted pieces. Etherial pieces and solid pieces.

A huge range of techniques are on display - hand stitching, machine stitching, painting, printing, cyanotype, trapunto, applique, patchwork piecing goldwork,silk paper, and many more ...

And the work represented a very wide range of inspirations too - from mammoths to power stations, and dolls shoes to comets.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the time between the submission of the pieces and the installation of the exhibition was contracted from 2 months to 2 days. It gave me a few scary moments, but we did it. And, we're hoping that we can tour the exhibition and show it again. A few leads are in the pipeline.

My piece is based on 'Elliman's embrocation', a medical and veterinary preparation that used to be manufactured in Slough. The ideas were simmering on the back burner for a long while and I couldn't get it to materialise. But finally I just went for it and I'm very pleased with how it came together. It's a series of five free machine embroideries, using paper, wallpaper, and layers of muslin.

I was worried by how it would hang on the Museum system as the paper layers were very light (and the hanging system really suits heavy framed pieces). Talk about making life difficult for myself as curator - but luckily it wasn't as much trouble as I feared.

At Play 3 - up and running

Guests playing with my installation at the Opening event and creating an SAS style assault with the toy soldiers and the string.

Me and the sea of heads that is 'Silicone Boys' by Tom Hackett, and feeling a bit like a lost head myself. There was much brain-ache putting my piece together, and heart-ache when I was forced to make last minute changes, that on the night I was left feeling a bit confused. But I had some lovely comments and great feedback from Jenny ('Knitted Room' seen in the picture behind heads) Kiehn's husband (sorry forgot your name!). Thank you - I was relieved that at least one person 'got it'.

Fashion fixers day

Great fun at Fashion fixers at South Hill Park. Some really creative work by the students - using heat transfer printing (top) with the other Jane to transform a lacy underslip, and building up an exciting mix of colours and textures (above).

My skirt - made from a man's knitted cotton pullover, with box pleat and frilled edge. Very pleased with how this turned out, with the raspberry pink polkadot underskirt.

A quick and easy denim bag to go with it.

The full outfit, with a recycled t-shirt scarf. Needs a bit more work to make the scarf more exciting - some printing would be great because the edge didn't go as wavy because the t-shirt wasn't quite stretchy enough. And some customising of the Betty Boop t-shirt. But the glitter print of Betty's dress is a perfect match for the raspberry scarf and polka dot voile of the skirt - so I love it.
And now its over to the Fashion Fixers for more work before the show on 16th April and the pop-up shop coming soon in Bracknell.

The opening night at the 'All that remains' exhibition. Thank you to Gemma for the pics, because I forgot to take my camera.

I went back with my camera to take pictures of my new piece 'Stalks' because I haven't got anywhere handy to hang them at home. But it wasn't very easy to photograph in the window. Difficult light, or difficult positioning of window frames, doors and bollards out in the street!

I like the silhouette view of the knobbly texture, but a view where you could see the structure of the whole wasn't easy. Here is a detail.

Fashion fixers

Looking forward to supporting the Fashion Fixers event which is happening next weekend (26/27th March) for young people with the Missed Out youth forum at South Hill Park in Bracknell. The weekend is billed as 'The Apprentice meets Scrapheap Challenge' while upcycling fashion to raise money for the 125 Project from the Kerith Centre, a charity set up to build a dormitory for young girls in Zambia to keep them safe while they finish their education away from home.

ReOrsa Project No 5 - Wokingham

At Play 3 - South Hill Park

I have been selected for At Play 3 in the Bracknell Gallery at South Hill Park, Bracknell, Berkshire. My proposal is a complete change for me in that it is's going to be an installation piece. It explores the obsessive side of a child putting together a scrapbook of old photographs dating from WWII.

Previous At Play exhibitions in 2009 and 2010 have been successful and popular shows at South Hill Park, and I'm looking forward to being part of the 2011 event from 17th April to 19th June.

Images of the previous shows can be seen on Cally Trench's website - the curator of the exhibitions, along with Outi Remes of the Bracknell Gallery itself.

In the meantime, best get busy ... I've got lots to do to develop my piece ready for show!

MoreArts - Wokingham

The MoreArts venue at 43c Peach Street in the centre of Wokingham is hosting the next ReOrsa exhibition, entitled 'All that remains'. It opens 10th March and will run until the 26th.

I am exhibiting, and am working on 'stalk-like' structures that will hang in the window of the venue. I have been busy experimenting with my ideas. Inspirations include the experimental piece of giant French knitting I made a couple of months ago, and stalks of cow parsley. I like the way cow parsley is so green and pliable when its new, and then stiff and hollow when it withers. Or is it just that I used to love to wrench them from the hedgerow and fight with them. I probably still would, but it doesn't seem to grow much around here.

Structure workshop - Baylis Court School

I'm getting ready to be 'Artist in Residence' for a day at Baylis Court School in Slough. I am excited to be working with two groups of GCSE level Art and Textile students, looking at lots of techniques and ideas for their project theme 'Structures'. We are going to work with the embellisher machines, Bondaweb fusing, weaving and stitching, and look at all the ways in which these techniques can be combined using fibre and fabric scraps.
I've been working on a few new samples.

Upcycling workshops at Leighton Park School

A rather nerve-wracking and snowy journey started my day at Leighton Park School in Reading. But as soon as I had arrived, unpacked my stuff and thawed out over a cup of tea with the textiles teacher, Jo, I had a fantastic day from start to finish.

The school collected a huge variety of old clothes, old bags, belts and bits and bobs. And then the students arrived and were excited to get started. We looked at samples and ideas and then launched straight in. We made a lacy cloche hat from old tops, bags from old dresses and skirts, a mini-puffball skirt from a fitted sheet and chopped and restyled blouses and dresses into funky new creations.

The day was divided into two groups, with the older students and sixth-form in the morning, and the younger ones down to year 7 in the afternoon.

Everyone enjoyed themselves, were keen to do more upcycling, and to add more finishing touches to their pieces when they got home. The only down-note was that the snowy weather meant that the Fair Trade fashion show planned for the parents and the students in the evening had to be cancelled. However, it will be rescheduled for January, and the extra time will mean even more unique, fabulous 'upcycled' creations for the students to model.

Breakthrough sold out!

I'm very pleased to say that the Breakthrough book - the catalogue of this year's exhibition by Contemporary Quilt that I designed, has sold out of its first edition. It featured full page images of each of the 42 quilts in the exhibition, including my own quilt.
Further copies are available via print-on-demand through Lulu.

University of Reading contracted supplier

"Unearth" - the Staffordshire Hoard

Inspired by the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard and the thought of uncovering such a find, I created this felt piece Unearth. It will be shown Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June at Reading Arts Week at the New Directions Centre, together with pieces by my EquilARTeral friends Sandy and Merete who also responded to the Staffordshire hoard - Sandy working with machine and hand embroidery, and Merete working with pieced patchwork.

Breakthrough book published

Breakthrough - the exhibition, will be appearing in its entirety at the Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham in August.

My quilt will be part of this exhibition, but even more exciting for me will be the exhibition catalogue which is NOW ON SALE!! This is the first time Contemporary Quilt have produced a full-scale, full colour 90 page catalogue. I designed the layout and the cover, and I'm proud (and totally biassed!) to say a detail of my quilt appears on the cover. It was a team effort with other CQ members providing photographic, typesetting, technical and proofreading support.

The book will be for sale at the Festival of Quilts for £10, or it can be made available by post.

Great fun had by all... The Discard/salvage workshop went really well. A great group with a mix of ages and experience produced some interesting experiments and intriguing results. We waded through my HUGE heap of salvaged clothes and fabrics, did some painting, some needle-felting/embellishing and some stitching.

Hanging in Slough

I went to Slough today to hang the Equilarteral work as part of the Ideas Bank 2010 exhibition at Slough Museum. The work is a group series with the theme 'Zoom'. We wanted to experiment and play with creating work at different scales - large, medium and small - playing with the idea of 'zooming-in' or 'zooming-out'. My series is on the left, Sandy is centre and Merete is on the right.

3-dimensional line course at West Dean College

West Dean College near Chichester - what a beautiful setting, what a messy work table, hopefully the start of some interesting ideas. I experimented with a lot of materials. Most interesting was the box. This had painted scrim, black organza and wire person shapes sandwiched in layers with copper wire and beads. The idea continued from the felt pieces I created on the theme of Personality - Connected/Disconnected. This explored the idea of personality going back in time, sometimes so visible and tangible and yet it cannot be reached.

I've booked to go again next year to work with felt with Jeanette Appleton and I can't wait.

3-dimensional line and (not so much) stitch

I've been on a 4-day course with Michael Brennand-Wood at West Dean College. It was great. I only touched a sewing machine twice and picked up a needle about three times, but I bent wire, twisted shapes, used wooden frames and well and truly took my ideas into 3-dimensions.

I was very nervous, over excited and over-awed to be working with an artist that I had seen at the Cloth & Culture Now exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, and again at the Stroud International Textile Festival. But Michael was incredibly friendly, approachable and informative. It was great to be able to ask questions over breakfast after a talk the evening before – I never think of my questions at the right moment for Q&A.

The college was lovely. A beautiful building, landscape and gardens. Well equipped workshops and yummy food. I ate far too many puddings. I would recommend it!

We Felt United!

Felt – intertwined, bound together, forever as one – United .

2009 is the United Nation's International Year of Natural Fibres. On October 3rd, 2009 - feltmakers from around the globe celebrated by joining together and displaying their felt. It will be the first annual International Day of Felt. The theme was set as yellow through to red. I joined in by making felt with my children's pre-school. We made bunting to decorate their room. The children (all aged 2-4) were fascinated by the feel of the fluffy fibres and each laid out fibres across their yellow triangle of pre-felt. Then we rolled, rubbed and scrubbed with hot soapy water. Our favourite bit was to rub with a Lego Duplo brick across the net over the felt and create lots of bubbles.

All the creations will become part of an online exhibition at FeltUnited.com created by artists Elis Vermeulen (Holland) and Cynthia Reynolds (Norway) after 17th October.

The ReOrsa event in Bracknell was a success. Here is my exhibit pictured at the Private View. There was lots of people at the Private View, and the gallery room overall looked great. The whole event was apparantly very busy on the Saturday with lots going on in the street and plenty of people through the doors of the exhibition. Unfortunately I couldn't be there on the busiest day. It was a great thrill to be included and on a roll of "You've got to be in it to win it" excitement, I entered my pieces for the Open Art Exhibition for Poole - ReOpen

Minerva Arts Centre, Llandidloes

Travelling through Wales for our family summer holiday meant I could visit the Summer Exhibition of the Quilt Association at Llandidloes. My Thin Blue Line quilt was selected to be included in the exhibition, so it was very exciting to be able to see it 'in situ'. http://www.quilt.org.uk/

Photographs were taken, but they have disappeared onto my other half's laptop. My favourite pieces were by Becky Knight - http://www.beckyknight.co.uk/ I was fascinated by the effects created by the quilts containing pebbles and pills.

Opening up for an Open Studios in SE Berks

The area I live in is planning to hold its first ever Open Studios event on the 26th-27th September 2009. Its an event for South East Berkshire (or in other words, Bracknell, Ascot, Wokingham and more or less anywhere between but not in Reading and Windsor).

I hope to join in with my friends from my EquilARTeral textile group. Its a scary prospect but it could be really exciting too. We're waiting for more information from the organisers (the Independent Arts Forum) ... so in the meantime I'm busy trying to work on our group project 'Connected:disconnected', in the hope that I will have enough to show by September!

I've recently been acccepted as a member of ReOrsa - an artist-led initiative promoting the activities of professional visual artists in the Thames Valley. The group was established in 2007, and the network aims to support and promote the activities of professional, practising visual artists in this area.

Above: Cut 2 on fold installation exhibition

A great day out exploring the textile festival in the Cotswolds. I enjoyed the train journey - a Great Western Intercity train goes SO FAST compared to the trundling London Waterloo train I'm used to.

The time for the exhibits however was nice and slow. I particularly enjoyed the 'Cut 2 on fold' installation - such attention to detail (right down to the admission badges) and such fun everywhere you looked. My other favourite was the works by Matthew Harris (I knew I recognised the fabric from somewhere and then discovered he had used cotton twill dustsheets - I must dig an old one out from the shed and experiment).

Can't wait for 2010 festival.

The Thin Blue Line quilts created by the Contemporary Quilt Group of the Quilter's Guild are featured in a German magazine. Mine is included! Very exciting to see a picture of my work in print.

Creating art for myself is a pleasure. Designing for someone else is hugely satisfying. Designing for myself equals pain and indecision. After much grinding of cogs, I've finally created my website at www.janeglennie.co.uk but there is plenty more to do (this news page included).
